I began turning in early 1995 having been encouraged by a close friend
(he bought the first lathe).
At the AWGB
Seminar 1997 I had a piece selected by Bert Marsh for inclusion
in the publication Wonders In Wood. At this stage in my development
I felt highly honoured as the piece was not finished and still isn't.
For the 1999 seminar I decided to go natural and entered a Natural
edged Acacia Bowl, this was used by GMC Publication to promote subscription
to the Woodturning Magazine.
Having had a piece picked at
each AWGB seminar I had attended, for 2001 it was time for something
a little more radical. I had created a wonderful coloured form but
as mentioned in Mark Bakers Article Woodturning Feb 2005 Issue 145
I went a little to far and wrecked it. Time to start again and along
came "Pearly Queen" it was finished at 12:30am the day
of the seminar. Some people hated it others loved it but it did
its job, it provoked controversy all weekend.
At the top of this page is my entry
for the 2003 seminar without to much patting on my back it is stunning.
Nature can create some wonderful material for us wood turners to
play with. This platter is 600mm x 480mm and nearly didn't make
it out of the workshop. At one point down the platter there is very
little wood holding it together.
The 2005 seminar is not far away and as yet I have not decided the
format of my pieces. I would encourage everyone to attend local
or National seminars as they are places to learn new techniques,
watch clever people making the art of Woodturning look easy.
